Sea Spell

When danger or pain press too nearly, they are incapable of giving any delight and are simply terrible, but at certain distances and certain modifications, they may be delightful

Edmund Burke, A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful.

Sea Spell is a body of work that seeks to discover how water can feed the senses and not just the imagination. It considers notions of the sublime and explores open water as life giving, as power, destruction and serenity. The impact water has in providing for a barrier as much as a bond. How our intuitive earthly limitations are expanded and enhanced with the magic of phosphorescence under the darkness of night when the display of pinprickings of light; the twinkling of diamonds and the swirls of neon leave the fleeting prints of our passage. This work attempts to captivate and identify specific experiences during swims in the open water.
